OKLAHOMA CITY – Two days after the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team pulled off an upset victory over Mid-America Christian in the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament, the Pioneer men couldn't match it.
The top-seeded, second-ranked Evangels ran their unbeaten streak to 14 as they defeated Wayland at Dill Soccer Field Saturday night, 4-1.
MACU (15-1-2) scored in the 11
th minute then got a spirit-breaking goal just 1:44 into the second half. The Evangels added to their lead in the 63
rd and 77
th minutes before Wayland got on the board with a goal by
Harry Garbutt – his first as a Pioneer– with just over five minutes left. It came after an initial shot from Garbutt, following a touch pass from
Leonardo Marini, defelected off the crossbar right back to him.
But it was too little, too late for coach
Robert Ssejjemba's team as the Pioneers closed out their season with a 6-9-2 record.
Wayland, which fell to MACU in the SAC opener Sept. 27, 3-0, took 13 shots, just three fewer than the Evangels, but MACU put 11 of theirs on-goal compared to just four for the Pioneers.
Santiago Hernandez fired four shots for the Pioneers while Alfaro got off three, two on-goal.
Ryan Naidoo fired twice.
Adriano Coppolechia started in goal for Wayland – his first appearance since Sept. 30 – and recorded seven saves.
The Pioneers have three home spring matches scheduled, the first March 4.
