The win for Wayland (9-4), which was coming off a tight 92-90 loss to No. 18 LSU-Shreveport on Dec. 19, was much more hard-earned than the Pioneers' season-opening 102-65 victory over
USW (8-5) on Nov. 4 in Plainview. WBU led 39-30 at the half, but the Mustangs rallied in the second half, even taking a lead. But the Pioneers regrouped and closed out the game strong to claim the 11-point triumph.
It was Wayland's final non-conference game of the regular-season and closed out a five-game road swing. The Pioneers return to Sooner Athletic Conference action and return to Hutcherson Center when they host John Brown (3-10, 1-6) at 8 p.m. Thursday. WBU is 4-3 in SAC play, having most recently beaten Oklahoma-Panhandle State, 89-61, on Dec. 15 in Goodwell, Okla.
