Wayland Baptist secured its most lopsided shutout victory in more than a decade as the Pioneers walloped Peru State (Neb.) on Saturday afternoon at Wilder Field, 18-0. The game was called after 6½ innings on the 10-run rule.
The win secured a home-opening sweep for the Pioneers, who on Friday defeated the winless Bobcats, 8-6 and 8-4.
Wayland (6-1) got another strong pitching performance, this time from
Deric Trevino. Named the Sooner Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week after tossing a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts against Houston-Victoria two weeks ago, Trevino on Saturday again allowed only two hits when he was lifted after 5 2/3 innings and with Wayland comfortably ahead. Trevino struck out eight and walked two.
Freshman
Brooks Browning finished up the sixth inning before
Garrett McClain threw the seventh.
The Pioneers, meanwhile, were scoring runs in bunches, plating five in the second, six in the third and seven in the fourth. WBU finished with 15 hits, with six players –
Hayden Ingram,
Arturo Disla,
Jake Green,
Cesar Lopez,
Dawin Santos and
Justin Porter – getting two hits each.
Santos hit his third homer of the weekend after going deep twice in game 2. Saturday's shot was a solo shot in the third, before Disla got a three-run blast. Disla also doubled, as did Green and Lopez. Disla ended with five RBIs, and
Tyler Latham and Ingram scored three runs apiece.
It was WBU's most lopsided win since a 20-1 victory over Jarvis Christian early last season. It was the Pioneers' largest shutout since a 25-0 victory over Mid-America Christian during the 2011 Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament.
Wayland returns to the road next week for a four-game, three-day series against New Mexico Highlands. The teams will play a single game at 2 p.m. Friday, a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday, then a single game at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The Pioneers are back home to host Adams State (Colo.) in a four-game series Feb. 25 and 26.
