Pioneers win finale to earn series split

ARLINGTON – Wayland Baptist wrapped up its four-game, Spring Break series with Arlington Baptist with a 6-2 win Saturday, earning a series split with the Patriots and former coach Brad Bass.

"The weekend made both teams better," said Wayland's first-year head coach Todd Weldon, who played for and served as pitching coach under Bass during his 24-year tenure with the Pioneers. "Coach Bass has already done a phenomenal job of developing his players and turning them into a winning program. Arlington Baptist played good defense, competed at the plate and pitched well all weekend long."

ABU won the first two games, 10-4 and 6-3, before WBU took the final two, 7-1 and 6-2.

In the finale, Cesar Lopez scored twice and provided three of Wayland's 11 hits – including two doubles – Dawin Santos drove in three runs, and Deric Trevino pitched seven strong innings to lead the Pioneers.

Wayland got a pair of runs in the third and three more in the fifth to assume a 5-0 lead. The Pioneers got one more in their final at-bat in the ninth to a 6-0 lead. The Patriots avoided the shutout with two runs in the ninth.

Trevino was strong on the mound, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out nine and walking only one in seven innings. Trevino improved to 4-0. Chase Jones recorded the final six outs, surrendering one hit – a home run – and one walk with two strikeouts.

ABU used five pitchers, who combined for nine Ks and eight walks.

Besides Lopez's three hits, Jake Green and Arturo Disla managed two apiece.

WBU is back in action at noon Tuesday for a doubleheader against Jarvis Christian in Hawkins. The Pioneers then return to Sooner Athletic Conference action next weekend with a three-game series at home against Texas Wesleyan.
