For the third straight game, Wayland Baptist found itself leading Texas Wesleyan only to have the Rams rally for the win, this time 10-6 in Saturday's finale of the Sooner Athletic Conference series at Wilder Field.
Wayland (16-12, 1-7 SAC) led 3-0 after five innings on the strength of
Arturo Disla's third solo home run of the weekend, an error on a fielder's choice and
Hayden Ingram's RBI-bunt. But Texas Wesleyan (19-12, 6-5) put up five runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and the final four in the eighth to pull away. Four of the runs were unearned as Wayland committed a pair of costly errors.
While TXWES scored runs in bunches, the Pioneers manufactured mostly single-run innings, including the final three.
William Flowers had an RBI-single in the seventh,
Dawin Santos homered in the eighth and Latham scored in the ninth after a lead-off walk, two steals and a throwing error.
The Rams produced a dozen hits against five WBU pitchers, who combined to record 12 strikeouts while walking five.
Deric Trevino (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season, giving up four runs (one earned) on five hits with six Ks in 5 2/3 innings.
Wayland put up 11 hits, including two each by lead-off hitter
Tyler Latham and No. 8- and 9-hole hitters
Brock Webber and
Justin Porter. Eight Pioneers recorded hits.
David Theriot, the second of three TXWES pitchers, earned the win, his second of the weekend after also picking up the "W" in Friday's 9-5 opener. The Rams rallied from a 4-0 deficit in that one then in game 2 dug themselves out of a 6-1 hole to prevail, 9-5.
Wayland will be Waxahachie next weekend to take on Southwestern Assemblies of God (22-7, 8-4). The Lions have won seven straight, including SAC series sweeps of Central Christian (Kan.) and Oklahoma-Panhandle St. SAGU hosts Huston-Tillotson Tuesday before welcoming the Pioneers for a noon doubleheader Friday and a single game at noon Saturday.
