Wayland Baptist picked up a pair of wins over Jarvis Christian here Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Bulldogs 3-1 and 8-0.
In their first two contests of a 10-game, regular season-ending home stand, it took the Pioneers (23-17) less than four hours to wrap up the non-conference doubleheader sweep of the Bulldogs (12-35), witnessed by close to 300 elementary students at Wilder Field.
Jarvis scored its lone run during its first at-bat of the day then was held scoreless the next 13 innings by seven Pioneer pitchers, who allowed only five hits and struck out 18, nine in each game.
In the opener, Wayland scored all three of its runs in the third, starting when centerfielder
Justin Porter slapped his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left. That turned the lineup over and led to back-to-back singles by
Tyler Latham and
Hayden Ingram. A wild pitch and throwing error on a pickoff plated Latham, then
Dawin Santos drove in the final run on a single.
Starter
Victor Feliz (3-3) earned the win, allowing no earned runs on two hits with six strikeouts and a walk in five innings.
Chase Jones pitched the sixth and
Jose Suero the seventh for his seventh save.
Game 2 saw Wayland produce its fourth shutout of the season and first in almost two months on the strength of four WBU pitchers scattering three hits with nine strikeouts and no walks.
Garrett McClain, in his second start of the year, improved to 2-0 after allowing no hits with five Ks in 2 2/3 innings.
Brooks Browning,
Connor Leach and
Chris Lacher gave up one hit each while Browning and Lacher struck out two each.
The Pioneers ended with four hits, only one more than Jarvis, but showed discipline at the plate by drawing nine walks off five Bulldog pitchers.
WBU scored six runs in the second on the strength of two hits and five walks. Santos plated two on a double.
The Pioneers scored their final two runs in the sixth when normal pitcher
Gloymer Cuevas slapped a pinch-hit, RBI-double then scored on
Hans Doughtie's sacrifice.
Wayland returns to Sooner Athletic Conference action at 4 p.m. Thursday at home against No. 12 Science & Arts of Oklahoma (29-8, 14-4). The Pioneers and Drovers play a doubleheader Thursday followed by a single game at 2 p.m. Friday.
