SURPRISE, Ariz. – After a season-opening setback Thursday, the Wayland Baptist volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Friday as part of the Ottawa Invitational. The Pioneers first dropped a hard-fought, 27-25, 27-25, 25-21 contest to Park-Gilbert (Ariz.) before taking it on the chin against Carroll (Mont.), 25-12, 25-10, 25-14.
Wayland (0-3) will wrap up the tournament with a final match at 11 a.m. Central on Saturday against Embry-Riddle, ranked the equivalent of 29
th in the NAIA.
Against Park (2-3), Wayland had two set points but couldn't close out the first as Park won three straight points on a kill, an ace and an attack error to prevail, 27-25.
In the second set, the Pioneers led by as many as three, 17-14, and had another set point at 24-23. But Park won four of the next five points and took a second-straight 27-25 win.
The Pioneers again led by as much as three in set 3 before Park regained the momentum and wrapped up the match in three with a 25-21 win.
WBU outhit Park, .253 to .200.
Alexa Hinojos finished with nine kills and no errors in 13 attempts to hit .692.
Fade Ogunbade and
Chante Moore added seven kills each. Hinojos produced seven blocks (six assists) while Ingram and
Brenna Daniel dug 11 balls apiece.
Elizabeth Wirth and Ingram ended with 15 and 12 assists, respectively.
Against Carroll (4-2), Wayland never got untracked and dropped three mostly-lopsided sets, 25-12, 25-10, 25-14.
Wayland ended with a negative .056 hitting percentage, managing just 16 kills and one block. Wirth ended with 10 digs and eight assists.
