Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer shuts out Saints, 3-0

Benefitting from another strong start and defensive effort, Wayland Baptist's men's soccer team remained perfect at Hilliard Field, defeating Our Lady of the Lake University on Tuesday afternoon, 3-0.

Bryan Alfaro scored twice and Daniel Ruiz once, with Ruiz also picking up an assist for the Pioneers (2-1-1). Leonardo Marini earned an assist as well. All three goals came in the first 40 minutes.

The first-half dominance mirrored Wayland's performance from its outing Saturday, a 2-0 win over Texas College when the Pioneers scored both goals in the first 11 minutes of play.

"I liked the way we started the game. Our tempo was high and we closed down the ball really well. I think scoring early in the game allowed us to settle down and play our game," WBU coach Robert Ssejjemba said.

"In the second half our energy dropped off, which is expected in the heat. Our final third was more lively in this game and we had more movements off the ball. Keeping a clean sheet is also important for the confidence of our backline and keeper."

The Pioneers again dominated possession, this time to the tune of 33 shots versus five for the Saints (0-1-1). Daniel Ruiz got off six shots, including three on-goal, while Alfaro managed five shots, all on-target. Santiago Hernandez and Luis Fernandez logged four shots apiece.

In all, 11 Pioneers were credited with shots.

None of the Saints' five shots were on-goal against the Pioneer defense and keeper Adriano Coppolecchia.

Next for the Pioneers is a trip to Hobbs, N.M., to take on University of the Southwest (0-2) at 4 p.m. (Central) Saturday. The Mustangs have been shut out by two Sooner Athletic Conference teams, University of Science & Arts (4-0) and Oklahoma City (3-0), in their two outings so far, both on the road.
