VICTORIA –
Ty Jackson tossed a six-hit, seven-strikeout shutout and
Danny Arambula delivered an RBI-single as Wayland Baptist prevailed in its 2023 season-opener Friday afternoon at Riverside Stadium over University of Houston-Victoria, 1-0. The Pioneers fell in the nightcap, 6-2.
Wayland (1-1), which went 3-1 against UHV last season when the Pioneers ended 29-23 and the Jaguars 24-26, overcame three errors in their season debut. UHV stranded nine players on base.
The Pioneers scored their lone run in the fifth.
Samuel Fabian drew a lead-off walk and went to second on a balk. After
Jack Kolich flied out, Arambula's single to left field scored Fabian.
Jackson walked only one while throwing 115 pitches in the seven-inning complete game. The senior right-hander logged four complete games last season when he posted a 5-4 record.
In the second game, the Jaguars scored their first runs of the day by plating two in the first against starter
Tyson Potts. Wayland got one back in the second when clean-up hitting catcher
Jake Green homered.
The Jags plated three in the fifth and another in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead. Wayland rallied in the seventh as designated hitter
Cooper Jauz slapped a one-out double, Fabian walked and Kolich reached on an error. After a strikeout, No. 9-hole hitter center fielder
Justin Porter drew an RBI-walk before the game ended on a fielder's choice grounder.
WBU was limited to two hits by junior right-hander Julian Garcia, who struck out 13 while walking two in a complete game.
Matheus Magalhaes relieved Potts, who struck out five but gave up five earned runs on six hits and four walks in 3 2/3.
The teams face off in another doubleheader starting at noon Saturday.
