Chickasha, Okla. – After grabbing an early lead in the later stages of the first half, the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team could not maintain the lead as Science & Arts scored five unanswered goals over the final 55 minutes to claim a 5-1 conference victory over the Pioneers Saturday afternoon.
The first half started a s defensive battle between the two teams before
Hayde' Gallardo took a pass from
Francisca Castello Gonzalez and buried a shot to put the Pioneers ahead 1-0 in the 33rd minute. That is all the Pioneers could muster as the Drovers tied the match in the 36
th minute to tie the match at 1-1 as the teams headed into the break.
Science & Arts launched an offensive attack in the early stages of the second half as they took the lead in the 48
thminute and then added to the lead with a goal just two minutes later. The Drovers added a pair of insurance goals later in the match to come away with the victory.
"In the first half, we moved the ball well, stayed organized, applied pressure, and created a few scoring chances," said head coach
Shiloh Posey. "We ended up capitalizing on one of those chances and took the lead. But just before the half, USAO drew level on a rebounded shot that just came off our keeper's hands and into the net. In the second half, we had a brief span of time where we lost our focus and gave away of couple of goals. After that, we went away from what we did in the first half and the Drovers were able to pull away."
