Bethany, Okla. – The Wayland Baptist Men's Soccer team saw a second-half comeback fall short as the Pioneers ended their season with a 2-1 loss to Southwestern Christian in the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Soccer Championships in Bethany, Okla., Friday afternoon.
After a defensive battle in the first 60 minutes of the match, the fourth-seeded Eagles cracked the scoreboard in the 62
ndminute to grab a 1-0 lead. Wayland answered just less than five minutes later as
Rennan Sousa scored on a penalty kick after a foul in the 18-yard box to even the tilt at 1-1.
The defenses then returned to center stage until Southwestern Christian found the goal in the 88
th minute to take a 2-1 lead. That is all that the Eagles would need as their defense did not allow Wayland to have another shot in the final two minutes of the contest to earn the win and advance to the conference semifinals.
The Pioneers finished the afternoon by taking eight shots with two being on frame while The Eagles had 13 shots on the day.
Jamol Williams and
Harry Garbutt each had two shots to lead the Pioneers' attack while goalkeeper
Louis Pryce finished the day with five saves.
Wayland completed the season with a 7-6-1 record.
