Kissimmee, Fla. – The Wayland Baptist Men's Soccer team fell short of advancing to the semifinals of the NCCAA National Tournament after a loss Wednesday afternoon at the Austin-Tindall Complex in Kissimmee, Fla.
The Pioneers opened pool play on Tuesday with a convincing 3-0 victory over Asbury as Wayland scored a goal in the first half and added a pair of insurance goals in the second half to claim the win.
Harry Garbutt scored his first goal of the day in the 22
nd minute off an assist from
Jamol Williams to give the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage. Williams added to the lead with an unassisted goal in the 63
rd minute to push the lead to 2-0. Garbutt completed the brace with an insurance goal in the 74
th minute to put Wayland out front 3-0.
Adriano Coppolecchia earned the win for the Pioneers by making two saves in the contest as Wayland outshot Asbury 13-9.
In the second game of pool play, Westmont scored a goal midway through the first half and was able to hold off a Pioneer comeback in the second half to eliminate Wayland 1-0. The Pioneers had a few chances in the second half but were able to only put one of their five shots on frame to try and draw the match even.
Williams led the Wayland attack with four shots while Garbutt added a pair of shots as the Pioneers were outshot 12-9 in the loss.
