McPHERSON, Kan. – Wayland Baptist's runs came in bunches for the third straight game Saturday afternoon when the Pioneers completed a three-game, Sooner Athletic Conference sweep of Central Christian (Kan.), winning 24-6.
The 24 runs were the most for WBU since a 27-9 triumph over University of the Southwest (N.M.) in Hobbs on Jan. 29, 2017. (The school record for runs is 28 against College of Santa Fe in 2009.)
Combined with Friday's 20-2 and 20-3 wins over Central Christian, Wayland scored 74 runs in the three-game series, which is believed to be a school record, shattering the previous mark of 63 put up in a set against USW, which included the previously-mentioned 27-9 win six years ago.
After getting 17 and 16 hits in Friday's games, Wayland produced 21 Saturday. The WBU record for hits is 26, accomplished in a 24-23 victory over MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) during a season-opening series in 2021 and in a 15-inning game against Eastern New Mexico University in 2009.
Arturo Disla and Cooper Jaux both had three hits, with Disla supplying six RBIs including four on a grand slam during a six-run fourth. Disla homered for the second straight game and sixth time this season. Freshman fill-in catcher
Cesar Pavon also homered, a three-run shot during a five-run sixth. It was Pavon's first as a Pioneer.
