24 players see action in Pioneers' 9-2 win

Home game breaks up 10-game road swing

Wayland Baptist used 17 position players and seven pitchers en route to posting a 9-2 victory over University of the Southwest (N.M.) Tuesday afternoon at Wilder Field.

Taking a break from conference play in their only home game during a 10-game road swing, the Pioneers (17-10) scored single runs in four of their first six at-bats before tacking on two in the seventh and three in the eighth to pull away from the Mustangs (14-11).

Wayland scored its nine runs on nine hits, seven walks, three hit batsmen and three USW errors, which made for four unearned runs. Eight Pioneers provided hits with designated hitter Cooper Jauz the only player with multiple swats. Arturo Disla drove in three runs, the first on a sacrifice fly to open the scoring then a two-RBI double in the seventh. Cesar Lopez got his only two-RBI double in the eighth.

Delvis Claudio turned in the only home run of the afternoon, a solo shot – his second of the season – in the sixth.

Tyson Potts, the first of those seven WBU pitchers, threw four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out four. Grayson Soukup (2-1), the second of the six relievers, picked up the win after throwing the sixth, allowing no runs and no hits and recording two outs on popups.

The Pioneers and Mustangs will meet up again in two weeks in Hobbs, after Wayland goes to Goodwell, Okla., to take on Oklahoma-Panhandle State (7-15-1, 2-4) this weekend. The Pioneers and Aggies play a doubleheader Friday and a single game Saturday, starting at noon both days.

The series starts a seven-game road swing that ends April 1 at Southwestern Assemblies of God. WBU won't be back at Wilder Field until April 7 against Mid-America Christian.
