Disla goes 5-for-5 as Pioneers win 8th straight

HOBBS, N.M. – Arturo Disla went 5-for-5 and Wayland Baptist pounded 16 hits as the Pioneers extended their season-long winning streak to eight games with a 9-4 victory over University of the Southwest (N.M.) here Tuesday.

Wayland (21-10) scored six second-inning runs to take control of the non-conference contest, a repeat of a matchup two weeks earlier in Plainview. The Pioneers also won that outing, 9-2.

In addition to DIsla's career day, Hayden Ingram had three hits and Caleb Rozier and Cooper Jaz two each. Both Disla and Rozier doubled and homered, with Rozier's blast being a three-run shot that provided half of the second inning's six runs. Disla's dinger – his seventh of the season – was a solo shot in the sixth that made for the final run of the day. Jake Green matched Disla's two RBIs with a double and sacrifice fly.

WBU's eight-game winning streak is matched by an eight-game hitting streak for Disla, whose team-best batting average improved from .393 to .424.

Seven pitchers took the hill for the Pioneers, combining to allow six hits, strike out seven and overcome eight walks and four hit-batsmen. Grayson Soukup (2-1) was credited with the win after throwing a hitless fifth with two Ks.

The Pioneers return to Sooner Athletic Conference play this coming weekend in Waxahachie against No. 23 Southwestern Assemblies of God University (23-9, 9-3 SAC). The league-leading Lions thus far have swept Science & Arts of Oklahoma and Central Christian (Kan.) while winning two from Southwestern Christian and one from No. 17 Texas Wesleyan.
