Plainview, Texas – The 23
rd ranked Pioneers lost a tough home game to RV Southwestern Assemblies of God University (10-4, 6-2 SAC) 92-84.
Wayland Baptist (10-4, 5-3 SAC) went down 16-7 early after SAGU hit four early 3-pointers. After falling down 20-9 with just over fourteen minutes remaining in the half, the Pioneers went on an 8-0 burst fueled by a
Bol Tong 3-point make and a
Linton Brown and-one conversion to trim the lead to 20-17. With a 23-19 score with just under 10 minutes left in the half, the Lions were able start an 11-0 run to extend their lead over the Pioneers to 34-20. Over the final 3:39 remaining until the halftime break,
Quentin Coleman scored 13 points for the Pioneers to help them cut the Lion lead down to 44-40 at the break.
Bol Tong scored the first 7 points for the Pioneers to start the second half, but the Lions were able to extend their lead to 57-47 after hitting three 3-point shots of their own. After a Lion 3-pointer extended their lead to 68-61 with just under eleven minutes remaining in regulation, the Pioneers were able to go on an 8-0 run fueled by 3-pointers from Brown and Coleman. This gave the Pioneers a 69-68 lead – their first lead of the game – with just over nine minutes remaining. However, the Lions had a huge 18-0 run that included four 3-point makes to give them their largest lead of the game at 86-69 with just over six minutes left. The Pioneers were able to trim the lead down to 6 with just under two minutes remaining, but time would run out and the Pioneers fell 92-84.
Quentin Coleman finished with 26 points, 2 assists, and 5-9 from 3-point range.
Linton Brown went for 18 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Bol Tong went for a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Jahvonta Jones scored 11 points and grabbed 4 rebounds.
