Pioneers Bats Erupt in Sweep of Dallas Christian including Game One Run-Rule

Plainview, Texas – The Pioneers get a dominant midweek sweep in a Wednesday doubleheader over Dallas Christian College. The Pioneers got solid pitching out of Addy Rich and Clarissa Rejino, and the bats gave them more than enough run support to quiet the Crusaders all afternoon.

Rich got the start in game one for Wayland Baptist, and she was terrific in her complete game performance. She through 6 innings, allowing one unearned run, 5 hits, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts. She only needed 56 pitches to get through her outing today due to the Crusaders being aggressive and not being able to get solid contact off Rich.

Wayland Baptist fell behind 1-0 in the top of the 2nd after the Crusaders had a runner reach on an error and later score off double play grounder. The Pioneers responded immediately in their half of the 2nd inning after Jadyn Fernandez ripped a single to right to score Reagan Davis from second. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 2nd, Rich helped her own cause by smashing a double to the left center field gap, scoring all 3 runners to make it a 4-1 Pioneer lead. The Pioneers extended their lead in the bottom of the 4th after Mikayla Carrillo reached on an error that scored Rich from second to make it 5-1. Wayland Baptist got 3 more runs in the bottom of the 5th inning after Davis ripped a single to left, and Rich singled to left field to drive in 2 more RBI's, making it an 8-1 Pioneer lead. In the bottom of the 6th, Berkley Bradley smashed a double to left to score the game-winning run from third to finish off the run-rule victory for the Pioneers.

Addy Rich threw a gem, but also did damage with the bat going 2-2 with 5 RBI's, a walk, and a run scored. Reagan Davis went 2-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. Mikayla Carrillo went 1-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Jadyn Fernandez went 2-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.

Clarissa Rejino made the start in game two for the Pioneers, and she also threw a complete game to pick up her first win on the season. Rejino went 7 innings, allowing 4 runs but only 2 earned runs, 9 hits, no walks, and 5 strikeouts. She threw 102 pitches and gave the Pioneers a great opportunity to win the game.

Wayland Baptist fell behind in the top of the 1st 1-0 just like in game one after the Crusaders scored on a wild pitch. The Pioneers answered quickly after Arianna Zubia ripped a triple to center field, and she was able to trot home for the run after the Crusaders through the ball out of play to advance the runner. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Rich smacked another RBI single to right to make it 2-1 Pioneers. Carrillo followed two batters later with an RBI single to give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead after two innings of play. With two Pioneers on and Jadyn Fernandez up to bat, she hit a ball deep into the left field corner for a 2-RBI triple, making it 5-1 in favor of the Pioneers. Jenna Sepeda then got in on the hitting parade with an RBI single in the bottom of the 4th to make it 6-1, Pioneers. After the Crusaders made it interesting with 3 runs in the top of the 6th, the Pioneers answered with 4 runs of their own in the bottom of the 6th to extend their lead to 10-4. It started with a Bradley RBI single, then Sepeda scoring on a wild pitch, followed by Abcde Garcia ripping a double to center to score two more runs. Rejino got 3 out of 4 batters in the top of the 7th to finish game two off and secure the Pioneers their first sweep of the season.

Fernandez went 2-4 with a triple, 2 RBI, and a run scored in game two. Garcia went 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI's. Bradley went 2-3 with and RBI, 2 runs scored, and a hit by pitch. Sepeda went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Zubia went 3-4 with a triple and 2 runs scored.

The Pioneers will get set to take on Texas Wesleyan on March 8th in their first Sooner Athletic Conference home series in program history. There will be a doubleheader on Friday followed by a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch for game one on that Friday will be at 2:00 PM
