Plainview, Texas – The Pioneer softball team fell short in their doubleheader on Saturday against Oklahoma Wesleyan University as they conclude their opening weekend series. The Pioneers suffered a 12-4 loss in game 1 and a 10-1 defeat in game 2 on Saturday afternoon.
Wayland Baptist fell behind 2-0 after the top of the first after two RBI singles by the Eagles and an error by the Pioneers.
Mikayla Carrillo led off the bottom of the 1
st with a leadoff single to center field, but the Pioneers were unable to bring her around to score and still trailed 2-0 heading to the 2
nd. Oklahoma Wesleyan scratched across another unearned run in the 2
nd inning and another RBI single in the top of the 3
rd inning to extend their lead to 4-0. With the score at 7-0 going into the bottom of the 4
th inning, the Pioneers knocked in 3 runs started by a
Madison Martinez RBI double and an
Arianna Zubia 2 RBI single to center field that scored
Brooklyn Araujo and Martinez. The Pioneers were unable to maintain that momentum as the Eagles tacked on 5 runs in the top of the 5
th inning to make the score 12-3. Araujo hit a sacrifice fly to score one more run for the Pioneers, but they fell short in game 1 by a score of 12-4.
Clarissa Rejino (0-2) pitched 3.1 innings for the Pioneers in game 1, giving up 7 runs but only 2 earned, 5 walks, and 2 strikeouts.
Addy Rich threw 1.2 innings, giving up 5 runs, walking 1, and striking out one batter.
Mikayla Carrillo finished 2-3 with two singles.
Madison Martinez went 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Arianna Zubia went 1-2 with 2 RBI.
Tiggy Rayos went 1-2 with a run scored.
Game 2 began in similar fashion for the Pioneers, falling behind 2-0 after the top of the 1
st inning with both runs being unearned due to errors. The Pioneers got their first two batters on via walk but were unable to bring them around to score. The Eagles doubled their lead to 4-0 in the top of the 2
nd after a 2-run home run. The Pioneers fell behind 6-0 in the top of the 3
rd after two more unearned runs came in to score. With the score at 10-0 in favor of Oklahoma Wesleyan, the Pioneers were able to scratch an unearned run across in the bottom of the 5
th after Araujo reached by an error scoring
Hope Castillo. The Pioneers were unable to get the offense going late as they fell 10-1 in the final game of the opening 4-game series of the 2024 campaign.
Amber Poorbaugh got the nod for the Pioneers in game 2 going 3.2 innings, giving up 10 runs but only 5 earned, walking 4 batters, and striking out 2.
Kaci Rivera pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief.

Hope Castillo scored the lone run for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers will head to Hobbs, New Mexico for a four-game series against the University of the Southwest (NM.) They will compete in a doubleheader on Friday with game 1 set for 11:00 AM, and a doubleheader on Saturday that is set to start at 12:00 PM.
