Texas Wesleyan takes Friday doubleheader from Pioneers in Fort Worth

Fort Worth – The Pioneers give up back-to-back runs on wild pitches in the bottom of the 7th inning in game two to suffer the Friday doubleheader sweep on the road against Texas Wesleyan University. The Pioneers fell in game one 3-2 and 4-3 in game two.

Wayland Baptist fell behind in game one after the Rams got a 2nd inning run on a double to left that made it 1-0 early. The Pioneers got a runner into scoring position with no outs after Gustavo Nava ripped a double down the left field line, but they went down in order the rest of the inning to leave the tying run stranded. Texas Wesleyan scored two more runs in the bottom of the 4th after an RBI double and a sacrifice fly made it a 3-0 ballgame.

The Pioneers were held scoreless until they got to the top of the 7th when Brayden Peyton singled to left to score Vann Johnson from third to make it 3-1, Rams. Hayden Ingram then reached second base on an error that scored Peyton to make it 3-2 with only one out and the tying run in scoring position. The Pioneers couldn't capitalize on the scoring threat and fell short in game one, 3-2.

Juan Gil-Franco got the start in game one for the Pioneers, and he was solid in his six innings of work this afternoon. Across six innings, Gil-Franco allowed two earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts.

Wayland Baptist opened the scoring in game two after Nava singled to begin the top of the 2nd and later scored on a balk by the Rams starting pitcher. Texas Wesleyan tied the game in the bottom of the 4th after an RBI single scored a runner from third to make it 1-1. Peyton led off the top of the 5th for the Pioneers with a single to left, and his pinch runner, Vann Johnson, later scored on a sacrifice by Jan Rollon Jr. to make it 2-1, Pioneers. Ingram followed up by sprinting home on a wild pitch to give Wayland Baptist the 3-1 lead. The Rams cut their deficit in half after an RBI double made it 3-2 Pioneers after six innings of play. Texas Wesleyan came back to win it in the bottom of the 7th after scoring two runs on wild pitches to sink the Pioneers in game two, 4-3.

Tyson Potts got the nod for the Pioneers in game two, and he went 6.1 innings, allowing four runs, four walks, and four strikeouts.

The Pioneers will look to salvage game 3 of this 3-game Sooner Athletic Conference road series when they take on the Rams tomorrow in a nine-inning game beginning at 1:00 PM.
