Waxahachie, Texas – The Pioneers took game one of the Thursday doubleheader at Southwestern Assemblies of God University but dropped game two to split the first two games of this 4-game Sooner Athletic Conference road series. Wayland Baptist won game one 6-2 and fell 9-0 in game two.
Wayland Baptist came out of the gates in game one swinging the bats as they scored three runs in the top of the 1
st inning. The scoring started with
Mikayla Carrillo hitting an RBI single to center to score
Jadyn Fernandez, then
Berkley Bradley drove a two-run single to right to make it 3-0. SAGU would get a run back in the bottom of the 2
nd after a sacrifice fly to center made it 3-1 heading to the 3
rd. In the top of the 3
rd, Bradley knocked in her 3
rd run of the game with an infield single that scored Fernandez from third to make it 4-1, WBU.
Wayland Baptist added on to their run total in the top of the 4
th after
Madison Martinez smashed a double to left to score
Abcde Garcia from second to extend their lead to 5-1. In the bottom of the 6
th, the Lions trimmed their deficit to 5-2 after a leadoff home run to left center field. The Pioneers would get that run back immediately when Carrillo would drive in her 2
nd run of the game with a single that scored Fernandez. The Lions failed to get anything going in the bottom of the 7
th, and the Pioneers secured the 6-2 victory in game one.
Bradley finished game one going 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs. Carrillo went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, a run scored, and a stolen base. Fernandez went 1 for 2 with 3 runs scored, 3 stolen bases, a walk, and a hit by pitch. Martinez finished 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
Addy Rich got the start in game one for the Pioneers, and she continued to pitch lights out and gave the Pioneers seven solid innings. Rich only allowed two earned runs while walking one and striking out two.
Game two was a tough one for Wayland Baptist as the offense just couldn't get going, and the Lions did a good job manufacturing hits to get runners across the plate. The Pioneers finished with 3 hits in the 9-0 game two defeat.
Reagan Davis,
Arianna Zubia, and
Jenna Sepeda each recorded singles for the Pioneers. The Lions did most of their damage on a two-run triple in the bottom of the 5
th, and a two-run single in the bottom of the 6
th to secure the run-rule victory.
Amber Poorbaugh made the game two start for the Pioneers, and she pitched 4 innings, allowed 4 runs, two walks, and no strikeouts.
Clarissa Rejino pitched 1.1 innings in relief, allowing 5 runs, two walks, and a strikeout.
The Pioneers will look to win the series against the Lions tomorrow when they face-off in another doubleheader with first pitch for game one set for 12:00 PM.
