Potts K's 14 as Pioneers Split Doubleheader at #22 Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City – The Pioneers shutout 22nd ranked Oklahoma City University in game two of the Sunday doubleheader behind Potts 14 K's to earn the split heading into the final game of the regular season. Wayland Baptist suffered a 5-3 loss in game one, but they bounced back tremendously in game two by defeating the Stars 6-0.

Wayland Baptist fell behind early after Oklahoma City scored the opening run on a defensive misplay by the Pioneers to make it 1-0, OCU. Samuel Fabian would erase that deficit for the Pioneers immediately in the top of the 2nd after he smashed a two-run homer to left, his 14th on the season, to give Wayland Baptist the 2-1 lead.

The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the 5th when the Stars got their big hit of the game on a grand slam to right center to make it 5-2 in favor of Oklahoma City. The Pioneers would get a run back in the top of the 6th after Arcadio Frausto grounded into a double play that allowed Cooper Jauz to scramble home for the run, making it 5-3. Wayland Baptist got two runners on and the go-ahead run to the plate in the top of the 7th, but a double play ended the contest and OCU escaped with the victory in game one, 5-3.

Fabian finished game one 2 for 3 with a double, a homer, and two RBIs. Peyton went 1 for 3 with a run scored.

Juan Gil-Franco got the start in game one for Wayland Baptist, and he battled through his outing today. Gil-Franco threw five innings, allowed three earned runs, three walks, and struck out three Stars. Collin Arnold threw a scoreless inning in relief for the Pioneers, allowing a walk while striking out one.

Wayland Baptist got out to an early lead in game two after Frausto drove a double to left center to score Fabian and Jauz, putting the Pioneers up 2-0 in the top of the 1st.  Delvis Claudio added a run for the Pioneers in the top of the 3rd with an RBI triple to make it 3-0. Claudio came in to score on a Peyton sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 in favor of the Pioneers.

Peyton stepped to the plate in the top of the 5th, and he proceeded to crush a two-run homer to give Wayland Baptist a commanding 6-0 lead. The Stars got a runner on second with one out in the bottom of the 7th, but Pioneers starting pitcher, Tyson Potts, got a line out and a strikeout to end the game at 6-0 and give the Pioneers the win.

Tyson Potts started game two for Wayland Baptist, and this was easily his best outing of the season. Potts tied a career high with 14 strikeouts over his seven-shutout innings, only allowing three hits and three walks. Other than the one strikeout in the bottom of the first inning, Potts record two or more strikeouts in every inning for the remainder of the game.

Peyton finished game two going 1 for 3 with a home run, a sacrifice fly, and three RBIs. Claudio went 2 for 4 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored. Frausto finished 1 for 4 with two RBIs.

The Pioneers will wrap up their regular season schedule tomorrow afternoon against the 22nd ranked Oklahoma City University Stars in a nine-inning contest that is set to begin at 12:00 PM.
