Wayland Men's Soccer Loses Close Game in Hobbs

Hobbs, NM - The Pioneer men's soccer team lost a very closely contested game 3-2 to University of the Southwest Wednesday afternoon. The game was extremely close in most statistical categories but the Mustangs scored a goal in the 80th minute to take the lead for good.

Wayland got on the scoreboard first just 3:20 into the game on a goal by Elliott Idehen. Vito Zatikyan was credited with an assist on Idehen's goal.
USW tied the game 1-1 just 3 minutes later, then took a 2-1 lead in the 29th minute.

The Pioneers scored quickly again to open the second half on a goal by Francis Motsi at the 47:19 mark to tie the game at 2 all. The Mustangs scored the final goal of the game in the 80th minute and the lead held up until the final whistle.

Coach Robert Ssejjemba had this to say about the game, "We lacked consistency on both ends of the ball in creating chances to score and defending.
We struggled holding onto the ball because of the surface of the pitch, so we couldn't really play the soccer we wanted.
We did show some character to tie the game but gave up the game winner through a poor give away."

The Pioneers take on the University of Houston-Victoria at home Saturday at 1:30.
