Plainview, TX – Wayland Baptist (11-4) faced off with RV Texas Wesleyan (9-5) in a huge Sooner Athletic Conference match-up Thursday night. The two teams met in Fort Worth on December 12 and the Pioneers escaped with a 67-64 win. The rematch held great significance in conference standings.
Much of the first half consisted of great defense, missed shots and turnovers. With 10:15 left to play in the first half, Texas Wesleyan led 7-4. Scoring picked up a little in the last ten minutes of the half as Texas Wesleyan led 23-20 at the end of the first twenty minutes of play.
The Rams came extended their lead to ten points, 30-20 in the first two minutes of the second half. The Pioneers went on a 12-1 run over the next four and a half minutes to take a 32-31 lead, a lead they would never relinquish.
The Pioneers led by as many as nine points on two occasions, 7:04 and 0:37 before they eventually earned the 64-57 victory.
Quenton Coleman led the Pioneers in scoring with 27 points.
Kabine Kaba was the only other Pioneer in double figures with 11 points. Coleman also contributed 4 steals, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Kaba added 4 rebounds and a steal.
Dylan McDougal scored 9 points along with 3 rebounds, 1 assist and a steal.
Jaxon Recer scored 6 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, dished out 3 assists and 1 steal.
Brett Leach scored 5 points along with 3 rebounds and 2 assists.
Joshua Tucker contributed 3 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.
The Pioneers continue their home stand Saturday at 4:00 PM when they take on the USAO Drovers.
