San Antonio – The Pioneers picked up their first two wins of the 2025 season with a sweep of Friday's doubleheader at Our Lady of the Lake University. Wayland Baptist won game one by a score of 9-4, then followed up by winning game two in dominant fashion, 15-2.
GAME ONE
After Wayland Baptist went down scoreless in the top of the 1
st inning, OLLU scratched across two runs in their half of the first to take a 2-0 lead. The Pioneers answered right back in the top of the 2
nd after
Delvis Claudio drove a two-run single up the middle to even the score up at 2-2.
Sinclair Pimentel put the Pioneers ahead 3-2 in the top of the 3
rd with a sacrifice fly to left that scored
Adonis Bernal from third.
The Pioneers put their foot on the gas in the top of the 4
th by scoring three runs on three hits to extend their lead to 6-2. It started with a two-run triple from
Cooper Jauz and concluded with an RBI single for
Riley Watson.
Felix Polanco would tack on two more runs for the Pioneers in the top of the 5
th with a two-run bomb to left to make it 8-2.
The Saints wouldn't go away and scored a run in each of the next two innings to trim their deficit in half, 8-4. Pimentel would get a run back for the Pioneers by hitting his second sacrifice fly of the ballgame, making it 9-4 Pioneers, which is how the scoring would end. The 9-4 victory in game one secures the first victory of the young 2025 season for the Pioneers.
Juan Gil-Franco got the start in game one for the Pioneers, and he was fantastic. Gil-Franco's final line showed: 6.0 innings, 4 runs (2 earned), 8 strikeouts, and 3 walks. Gil-Franco earned his first win of the season and he is now 1-1 on the season.
Tyson Potts threw a scoreless inning in relief – getting all three outs via the strikeout.
Polanco finished 2 for 3 with a home run, a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Claudio went 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored. Jauz went 1 for 2 with a triple, two RBIs, a walk, and a run scored.
GAME TWO
Our Lady of the Lake got the scoring started in game two – a leadoff home run to begin the bottom of the 2
nd to make it 1-0. The Pioneers answered right back in the top of the 3
rd with a two-run bomb from Watson to make it 2-1, WBU. OLLU struck again in the bottom of the 4
th for their second solo shot of the game to tie the score up at 2-2.
When the game moved to the top of the 6
th, the score was still tied at 2-2. However, the Pioneer offense erupted for 9 runs on eight hits to take a commanding lead over the Saints. The massive inning started with a two-run double from Polanco. Claudio followed that with a double to left center to score the third run of the inning.
Brayden Peyton then smoked an RBI double to right to scratch across the fourth run of the inning for the Pioneers. Watson then continued his solid afternoon with a two-run single to make it 8-2, WBU. Pimentel extended the onslaught with a two-run triple to make it 10-2 Pioneers. The torrid stretch was capped off with an
Arcadio Frausto RBI single to make it 11-2 Wayland Baptist.
The Pioneers contagious hitting trend continued into the top of the 7
th as Raphael Beltre Toledo crushed a three-run homer to left center to make it 15-2. Freshman
Garrett Moseley threw a scoreless bottom of the 7
th to seal the 15-2 victory for the Pioneers – securing the Friday doubleheader sweep of the Saints.
Branin Seibert was terrific as the game two starter – finishing with six innings, two runs, six strikeouts, and two walks. Seibert was the winning pitcher in this one and now owns a 1-1 record on the young season.
It's tough to spotlight just a handful of key performances in this one – the offense was electric. Beltre Trinidad stepped up off the bench and went 2 for 2 with a home run, a single, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Peyton went a perfect 3 for 3 with a double, an RBI, and a walk. Watson finished 2 for 4 with a home run, four RBIs, and two runs scored.

The Pioneers will look to win the series over Our Lady of the Lake University on Saturday, February 1
st, when they conclude the set with another doubleheader. First pitch for Game One is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
