Dallas, TX – Wayland Baptist traveled to the Metroplex to face the University of North Texas Dallas Thursday and the underdog Trailblazers came away with a 71-64 win.
UNT Dallas took a 2-0 lead twelve seconds into the game when they made two free throws and they never trailed. The Trailblazers took a 37-28 lead into halftime. They out shot the Pioneers from the field 43.3% to 32.4%. UNT Dallas forced eleven WBU turnovers and turned that into 20 points while the Pioneers got zero points off of eight Trailblazer turnovers.
UNT Dallas controlled the early parts of the second half and held their largest lead of 18 points with 8:52 left to play. With increased defensive intensity, WBU began to chip away at the lead and got as close as five points with 2:58 remaining on two free throws by
Quenton Coleman. However, the Trailblazers were able to hold off the Pioneers for the seven-point upset victory.
Kabine Kaba had a double-double for Wayland Baptist with 12 points, a season high 15 rebounds and 4 blocks.
Quenton Coleman led the way in scoring with 31 points, including 11-15 from the free throw line.
Brett Leach was the only other Pioneer in double figures with 10 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.
Dylan McDougal scored 7 points along with 5 rebounds and 2 steals.
James Lee added 2 points and 3 assists and
Alex Rojas contributed 2 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and a block.
Jaxon Recer came in with 5 rebounds and a block.
The Pioneer's road trip continues Saturday at Nelson University, the first place team in the SAC. Tip off is 4:00 PM.
