PLAINVIEW, TX -- Wayland Baptist picked up their fourth consecutive win in a big way Saturday afternoon, powering past Langston University, 42–28, in an offensive showcase at Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldog Stadium. This was the Pioneers first time to knock off the Lions in program history.
Running back
Keamodre Horace turned in another stellar performance, rushing for 170 yards and three touchdowns on just 15 carries, while quarterback
Khalon Davis added 195 yards through the air and two touchdown passes to guide the Pioneers (4–2, 3–2 SAC) to their fourth straight home victory.
After a back-and-forth first half that saw the teams deadlocked at 14–14, the Pioneers took control in the second half behind big plays from their offensive leaders. Davis connected with
Donte Hurt for a 32-yard touchdown to open the third quarter, though Langston immediately answered with an 87-yard kickoff return. Unfazed, Horace broke loose for a 14-yard score on the next drive to restore the lead, then added several key runs to set up later touchdowns.
Langston (2–5, 2–3 SAC) briefly tied the game at 28–28, but Wayland's offense erupted again in the fourth quarter. Davis found
Maddox Plazek for a 39-yard touchdown strike to give Wayland the lead for good, and
Damon Ford sealed the win with a 21-yard scoring run late in the fourth. Ford finished with 98 rushing yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.
The Pioneers racked up 472 total yards of offense, including 277 on the ground, averaging an impressive 7.7 yards per rush. Wayland's defense also played a crucial role, forcing two interceptions and holding Langston scoreless in the fourth quarter. Brennan Davis led the way defensively with 13 tackles and a half sack, while
Isaiah Brooks and
Jesus Lopez each came up with interceptions.
The win moves Wayland Baptist above .500 in Sooner Athletic Conference play and keeps the Pioneers in contention heading into the final stretch of the season. The current four-game win streak is the programs longest win streak since winning five straight back in 2016.
Wayland Baptist (4–2, 3–2 SAC) will look to build on the momentum next weekend when they hit the road to face Arkansas Baptist on Saturday, October 25
th in Little Rock, Arkansas. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
