PLAINVIEW, TX -- Wayland Baptist women's soccer fought with heart and hustle Tuesday afternoon but couldn't overcome a strong Oklahoma City squad, falling 3–0 at home.
The Pioneers (5–8, 2–5 SAC) created several solid opportunities throughout the match but couldn't find the back of the net against an OCU team that entered the contest ranked among the top in the conference.
Junior midfielder
Camila Zavala led the Wayland attack with four shots — all on target — forcing OCU keeper Candela Blanco into multiple saves. Defender
Talia Gisonni added two more shots, including one early in the second half that tested the Stars' back line.
Ashley Perez and
Makayla Coronado each contributed offensively while logging full 90-minute efforts.
Despite facing heavy offensive pressure, goalkeeper
Ashley Lopez stood tall between the posts, finishing with eight saves — several of them in one-on-one situations — to keep the Pioneers within reach.
Oklahoma City (12–1–2, 5–1–1 SAC) struck first in the 14th minute, then added two second-half goals in quick succession to secure the result.
Wayland's defense, anchored by
Gabriella Chapa,
Narriah Gomez, and
Talia Gisonni, worked tirelessly to contain OCU's multiple attackers, while the midfield battled to generate counterattacks.
Wayland Baptist returns to action this weekend as the Pioneers hit the road to Waxahachie, Texas for a showdown with the Lions of Nelson University. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM.
