Pioneers Take Down Nelson to Push Win Streak to 6, Tying Longest Winning Streak in Program History

PLAINVIEW --- Wayland Baptist shook off a sluggish start and poured on 39 unanswered points to roll past Nelson University, 45–27, Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Greg Sherwood Memorial Stadium. With the win, the Pioneers have now tied their longest consecutive winning streak of six games, which was set back in 2016.

After falling behind 21–6 midway through the second quarter, the Pioneers (6–2, 5–2 SAC) found their rhythm behind quarterback Khalon Davis, who threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns. Wayland's offense exploded for 448 total yards, including 159 on the ground, while the defense held Nelson scoreless for nearly two full quarters.

Running back Damon Ford sparked the rally with a 1-yard touchdown early in the second quarter and added another score from nine yards out in the third, finishing with 73 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Keamodre Horace powered the ground game as well, running for 98 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Davis connected with Maddox Plazek and Jaylin Weathers for touchdowns before halftime, trimming Nelson's lead to 21–18 at the break. The Pioneers then dominated the second half, outscoring the Lions 27–6. Davis' 37-yard strike to Donte Hurt in the fourth quarter gave Wayland a commanding 38–21 advantage, and Brennen Davis sealed the win moments later with a 15-yard interception return for a touchdown — the Pioneers' second pick of the day.

Wayland's defense came up big throughout the game, tallying six tackles for loss and a sack. Brennen Davis led the team with 10 tackles, while Isaiah Brooks added nine and Jaylon Broussard snagged an interception.

With the victory, Wayland improves to 6–2 overall and 5–2 in conference play, remaining in the thick of the SAC title race. The Pioneers will look to extend their winning streak next week when they travel to Fort Worth for a matchup against a stout #25 Texas Wesleyan team. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM.
