Pioneers Season Comes to an End with Loss at 1-Seed JBU in SAC Quarterfinals

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. --- Facing one of the top-ranked teams in the nation, the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team closed out its 2025 season on Wednesday afternoon with a tough 7–0 loss to 1-seed John Brown University at Alumni Field, eliminating the Pioneers from the 2025 Sooner Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championships.

Despite the scoreline, the Pioneers battled throughout the match, showing grit and determination against a Golden Eagle squad that entered the contest among the NAIA's elite. Wayland hung tough in stretches of play, particularly early in the first half, before JBU's offensive depth began to take over.

John Brown scored twice before halftime, then added five more in the second half. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Lopez shouldered a heavy workload in goal for Wayland, recording four saves while facing 20 total shots from the hosts. Defensively, Paula Cubillos, Talia Gissoni, and Cecilia Lopez anchored the back line as the Pioneers worked to contain JBU's relentless attack.

Offensively, Wayland began pressing to try and find their rhythm in the second half, generating all four of its shots after the break. Narriah Gomez and Ashley Perez each put attempts on target, while Gabriella Chapa and Perez also created chances in the attacking third. The Pioneers also earned a pair of corner kicks while continuing to press until the final whistle.

With the loss, Wayland Baptist ends its season with a 5–10–1 overall record, showing progress in several areas as a young roster gained valuable experience throughout the fall campaign.
