Plainview – The Pioneers suffered a tough 7-4 defeat to the University of the Southwest (NM) after the Mustangs hit a late three-run homer to seal the win.
Wayland Baptist fell behind 1-0 in the top of the 1
st after the Mustangs worked a bases-loaded walk. The Mustangs extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the 2
nd after a bases-loaded single drove in two runs.
Samuel Fabian stepped to the plate with two on and one out in the bottom of the 3
rd, and he promptly crushed a three-gun bomb to center to tie the game up at 3-3. The Pioneers were able to capture the lead in the bottom of the 5
th after
Delvis Claudio worked a lead-off walk, stole second base, and finally scored after the Mustang pitcher threw a wild toss over to third on another Claudio stolen base attempt that allowed him to come across and make it 4-3.
The Pioneer lead didn't hold for long as the Mustangs answered back in the top of the 5
th with a solo home run to even the score up at 4-4. The Mustangs would deliver the brutal blow to the Pioneers in the top of the 6
th with a go-ahead three-run home run to make it 7-4. The Pioneers went scoreless over their final two at-bats and suffered the 7-4 defeat to the Mustangs.
Fabian finished the afternoon going 2 for 3 with a home run (his 4
th this season) and three RBIs.
Arcadio Frausto finished 2 for 4 with two singles. Claudio went 1 for 2 with a double, a walk, and a run scored.
Up next for the Pioneers is a trip to Canyon, Texas for a single nine inning game against the Buffaloes of West Texas A&M University on Saturday, February 8
th. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
