Pioneers Haunted by Big Innings From Crusader Offense

Dallas – The Pioneers traveled to Dallas, Texas for a doubleheader against Dallas Christian College, and were unable to contain the Crusaders offense as they went 0-2 on the afternoon. Wayland Baptist suffered the 13-7 loss in game one, then the Crusaders took game two, 14-6.
 
 
GAME ONE
 
Wayland Baptist got off to a great start offensively in game one and quickly took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st after Mikayla Carrillo reached on a lead-off double and later scored on a Brooklyn Araujo RBI groundout. The Pioneers then got two runs in the top of the 2nd after Carrillo drove in a run with a sacrifice fly followed by an RBI single from Arianna Zubia that made it 3-0.
 
Zubia tacked on another run for the Pioneers in the top of the 4th after hitting another RBI single to make it 4-0. The Crusaders got on the board in the bottom of the 4th with two runs to make it 4-2, but the Pioneers got a run back in the top of the 5th after back-to-back doubles from Christian Moyers and Berkley Bradley made it 5-2.
 
The commanding lead for the Pioneers evaporated in the bottom of the 5th as the Crusader's offense exploded for seven runs on five hits that made the score 9-5, DCC. The Pioneers responded in the top of the 6th with two runs to trim their deficit to 9-7, but the Crusaders had another offensive explosion in the bottom of the 6th as they scored four runs on three hits to make it 13-7.
 
The Pioneers were unable to score any runs in the top of the 7th and fell to the Crusaders in game one, 13-7.
 
Zubia finished a perfect 3 for 3 with three singles, a walk, and two RBIs. Bradley finished 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Carrillo went 1 for 2 with a double, an RBI, a walk, and two runs scored.
 
 
GAME TWO
 
The Crusaders opened the scoring in game two with an RBI single that made it 1-0 after the first inning. The Pioneers would answer back in the top of the 2nd after Araujo drove in Carrillo with an RBI double to make it 1-1. However, the tie wouldn't last long as the Crusaders offense continued their torrid day at the plate by combining for 12 runs over the 3rd and 4th inning – taking a commanding 13-2 lead over the Pioneers.
 
Freshman Makayla Sanchez ignited some fight out of the Pioneers after she crushed a three-run home run that made it 11-5, DCC. Adriana Armstrong then stepped to the plate and ripped a triple to right, and she would come across to score after Moyers hit a sacrifice fly to make it 11-6, DCC.
 
The Crusaders would hold the Pioneers scoreless the rest of the afternoon, and also added one more run in the 5th inning to make the final score, 14-6.
 
Makayla Sanchez finished 1 for 3 with a three-run home run. Araujo went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.
 
 
UP NEXT
 
The Pioneers will return home for two exhibition games against Hill College on Tuesday, February 11th. The two teams will face-off in a doubleheader, and game one is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM.
