Goodwell, Okla. – The Pioneers held a late lead, but the Aggies scored six late runs to defeat the Pioneers, 10-7. The Pioneers still went on to win the series 2-1 thanks to the sweep in Friday's doubleheader.
Wayland Baptist opened the scoring in this series finale after
Sinclair Pimentel drove in
Christian Toledo with an RBI single to make it 1-0, WBU.
Felix Polanco followed that up with another RBI single to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead after the top of the 1
st.
The Aggies responded in their half of the first with three runs on five hits to take a 3-2 lead after the first. However, the Pioneers wasted no time retaking the lead in the top of the 2nd – starting with Pimentel being plunked by a pitch with the bases loaded to score a run and even it up at 3-3.
Arcadio Frausto then worked a bases-loaded walk to give the Pioneers a 4-3 lead. The Pioneers capped off the strong offensive inning for the with another RBI single to left to make it 5-3.
The Aggies got a run back in the bottom of the 2
nd to make it 5-4, but
Brayden Peyton got the run back for the Pioneers in the top of the 4
th with a solo shot to center – his 5
th home run this season – to give the Pioneers a 6-4 lead. Peyton added another run for the Pioneers in the top of the 6
th with an RBI double to score Polanco from first to make it 7-4, WBU.
The Aggies had an offensive outburst over the 6
th and 7
th innings, scoring 6 runs on four hits to take a 10-7 lead over the Pioneers late. The Pioneers had a couple of opportunities to tie the game, but it wasn't meant to be as the Aggies secured the 10-7 win over Wayland Baptist to prevent the sweep.
Pimentel finished the game going 2 for 3 with two RBIs, a walk, and a hit by pitch. Peyton went 2 for 5 with a home run, a double, and two RBIs. Polanco went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Up next for the Pioneers will be a quick trip to San Angelo, Texas for a mid-week doubleheader on Tuesday, March 4
th against one of the best teams in the NCAA Division II, the Angelo State University Rams. Game one is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM.
