Pioneers Dominate Mustangs 19-6 for 7th Straight Victory

Hobbs, New Mex. --- The Pioneers extended their winning streak to seven games on Tuesday afternoon after picking up a 19-6 midweek non-conference road win against the Mustangs of the University of the Southwest (NM).

Wayland Baptist jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning over the University of the Southwest (NM) after a Mustang error allowed Felix Polanco to come around and score.

The Mustangs scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the 2nd on a sacrifice fly, but the Pioneer offense did a lot of damage in the bottom of the 3rd to take a commanding lead.

The big inning started with a Polanco RBI double that put the Pioneers ahead, 3-1. Samuel Fabian tacked on a couple more runs with a two-run single that put the Pioneers in front, 5-1. Fabian later came across to score after Sinclair Pimentel smoked an RBI single to make it 6-1. The five-run inning was capped off by an RBI single from Christian Toledo that gave the Pioneers a 7-1 lead.

The Mustangs battled back to make it 7-5 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Pioneer offense erupted once again, this time for eight runs that pushed their lead out to ten.

Polanco started the inning with an RBI single to make it 8-5. Pimentel later drove in a pair with a two-run single that made it 10-5, WBU. Brayden Peyton got involved in the action with a sacrifice fly that made it 11-5. Riley Watson tacked on another run with an RBI single that gave the Pioneers a 12-5 lead. The massive blow in the inning was delivered by Delvis Claudio, which was a three-run bomb – his 15th home run of the season – that put the Pioneers ahead 15-5 after the top of the 6th.

The Pioneer offense wasn't satisfied, so they added four more runs in the top of the 7th thanks to a Peyton two-run double, and a Christian Toledo two-run triple that gave them a 19-5 lead.

The Mustangs added one run in the bottom of the 7th, but their deficit was far too great to overcome as the Pioneers dominated for a 19-6 victory – their 7th straight win. With the win, the Pioneers now own a 21-13 overall record and 11-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
