Plainview --- Game One of the Opening Round in the 2025 Sooner Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament went to the Pioneers after a huge start was enough to rattle the Rams and clinch a 12-7 victory.
 
Game Two was near completion, but severe thunderstorms forced the game to be called early and moved to tomorrow, April 26
th.
 
 
GAME ONE
 
Texas Wesleyan jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1
st of the series opener after an RBI double opened the scoring.
 
The Pioneers answered back in a massive way in their half of the 1
st, and the big inning started with 
Felix Polanco smoking an RBI single to center to even the score up at 1-1. 
Arcadio Frausto followed two batters later with an RBI single that put the Pioneers ahead, 2-1.
 
Two batters later, 
Brayden Peyton added another run for the Pioneers with another RBI single to make it 3-1. 
Sinclair Pimentel later came around to score after a costly Lion error made it 4-1, WBU. The huge inning was capped off by a successful double steal that saw Raphael Beltre Toledo sprint home to score and give the Pioneers a 5-1 advantage after one inning of play.
 
The Rams got a run back in the top of the 2
nd after an RBI single made it 5-2.
 
However, the Pioneer bats were still scorching from the first inning, and it carried over into the bottom of the 2
nd.
 
The Lions gave the Pioneers an early boost in the inning after another costly error allowed 
Cooper Jauz to rush home and score to make it 6-2, WBU. Polanco then gave the Pioneers a 7-2 lead after sprinting home on a wild pitch by the Lions. Pimentel followed with a hard-hit double to left center that scored Frausto from third to make it 8-2, Pioneers, after two innings of play.
 
The Rams struck again for two more runs in the top of the 5
th to trim their deficit to four, but the Pioneers got one of those runs back in their half of the 5
th after a sacrifice fly from 
Delvis Claudio made it 9-4.
 
Polanco added a massive insurance run in the bottom of the 6
th after slugging an opposite field home run to right – his 15
th home run of the season – to extend the Pioneer lead to 10-4.
 
Texas Wesleyan wouldn't go down without a fight, scoring two runs in the top of the 7
th and one run in the top of the 8
th to trail the Pioneers 10-7.
 
However, Pioneer senior pitcher 
Juan Gil-Franco retired the Rams in order in the top of the 9
th to clinch the 10-7 game one win for Wayland Baptist.
 
Polanco led the Pioneers offensively in this series opener – finishing 3 for 5 with a home run, two RBIs, a stolen base, and three runs scored. Pimentel went 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Frausto finished 2 for 3 with two singles, a hit by pitch, a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored. Jauz went 2 for 4 with a double, a stolen base, and two runs scored.
 
 
UP NEXT
 
Game Two of Friday's Opening Round doubleheader was forced to be completed tomorrow, April 26
th due to rain. The game will resume at 2:00 PM with the Pioneers trailing 3-0 in the Top of the 8
th.
 
If this result holds, the Pioneers and Rams will play a decisive Game Three 30-minutes later to determine who advances to Chickasha, Oklahoma for the Sooner Athletic Conference Semi-Finals. However, if the Pioneers can pull off the comeback, then they will sweep the series, and the final game will not be necessary.
