ALAMASO, Colo. -- Wayland Baptist women's soccer came up short in Thursday's non-conference matchup, falling 4–0 to Adams State.
The Pioneers (3-3) held tough through stretches of the match, but the Grizzlies (3-1-1) capitalized on their offensive chances to secure the victory. Goalkeeper
Ava Kent once again stood strong between the posts, recording
six saves while facing a relentless 25-shot barrage from the hosts.
Adams State struck early with a goal in the 7th minute and carried that 1–0 lead into halftime. Wayland's defense battled to keep the game close, with strong efforts from
Paula Cubillos, who also tallied one of the Pioneers' two shots on target, and
Cecilia Lopez anchoring the back line for a full 90 minutes.
In the second half, the Grizzlies added three more goals despite the Pioneers' best efforts. Offensively, Wayland generated a late push as
Aliza Garcia nearly put the Pioneers on the board in the 86th minute with a shot that struck the crossbar. Cubillos also forced a save in the closing moments.
Though the final scoreline favored the Grizzlies, head coach
Alex Castaneda's squad showed resilience and continued growth as they prepare to shift focus toward conference play.
The Pioneers will be back in action
Saturday, September 27th, when they travel to Fort Worth to open Sooner Athletic Conference play against
Texas Wesleyan University. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
