PLAINVIEW, Tex. -- Wayland Baptist women's soccer kept its unbeaten start rolling Wednesday afternoon, defeating the University of the Southwest, 4–2, at home. The victory pushed the Pioneers to
3-0 on the season, continuing their strong early form.
The Pioneers struck early in the first half when
Ashley Perez found the back of the net in the 14th minute, her second goal of the season.
Narriah Gomez added to the lead in the 31st, putting Wayland up 2–0 heading into halftime.
Out of the break, the offense wasted no time.
Mallory Perez scored less than a minute into the second half, making it 3–0. Southwest responded with goals in the 50th and 68th minutes, trimming the deficit to one and putting the pressure back on the Pioneers.
But Wayland Baptist's attack had the final word. In the 89th minute,
Ashley Perez delivered her second goal of the day, assisted by Gomez, sealing the 4–2 win.
Perez led the Pioneers with two goals on three shots, while Gomez contributed a goal and an assist.
Mallory Perez also scored her first of the season, and goalkeeper
Ashley Lopez made four saves to anchor the defense. Wayland outshot Southwest 15–8 and generated eight shots on goal.
The Pioneers also showed resilience, overcoming three yellow cards and a second-half push from the Mustangs to close out the victory.
"Not the best performance we've had this season," said head coach Alex Castenada when recapping today's win. "Going up three goals and giving up two late in the game is tough. We're starting to get good performances from players who haven't got going yet, which is good and will help us as we move forward. We will take the win and move on to the next."
Wayland Baptist will now turn its focus to its next matchup on the road, traveling to face the
University of Texas–Permian Basin on Wednesday, September 10th. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
