PLAINVIEW --- The Pioneer men's basketball team delivered a complete performance Thursday night, cruising to a commanding 97–62 victory over Central Christian College inside the Hutcherson Center. With the win, the Pioneers have now won five consecutive contests.
The Pioneers set the tone immediately, jumping out to an early double-digit lead and never looking back. Wayland Baptist shot an efficient 57.4 percent from the floor and an impressive 59.1 percent from three-point range, building a 52–21 halftime advantage after a dominant opening 20 minutes.
Jamari Lawrence led the charge offensively, scoring 21 points while knocking down five three-pointers and controlling the tempo throughout the game.
Rico Yarbrough recorded a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while
Chuks Ejiofor chipped in 16 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, while shooting perfect from the floor.
Wayland's depth proved to be a difference maker as well, with multiple Pioneers stepping up and contributing on both ends of the floor.
Marcus Green added 12 points off the bench, and
Jordan Logan scored nine points while helping anchor the defensive effort.
Defensively, the Pioneers forced turnovers and limited Central Christian's efficiency, holding the Tigers to 36.5 percent shooting overall. Wayland controlled the paint and the glass, outscoring Central Christian inside and converting second-chance opportunities to maintain separation throughout the contest.
The Pioneers continued their momentum in the second half, stretching the lead to as many as 37 points while maintaining composure and energy on both ends. Wayland outscored Central Christian 45–41 in the second half to secure the win.
The Pioneers will hit the road for the next contest, traveling to Fort Worth, Texas for a showdown with Texas Wesleyan. The game is scheduled to begin at approximately 8:00 PM.
