Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Queens Take Down Tigers, 82-69, for 4th Consecutive Victory

PLAINVIEW --- A balanced offensive attack and strong individual performances across the lineup propelled the Wayland Baptist women's basketball team to an 82–69 victory over Central Christian College of Kansas on Wednesday night at the Hutcherson Center. With the win, the Flying Queens extended their winning streak to four straight games.

Freshman Cania Mitchell led the way for the Flying Queens with a game-high 24 points, attacking the lane and converting at the free-throw line while also contributing defensively with seven rebounds and three steals. Mitchell's aggressive play helped Wayland maintain control throughout the contest.

Brooklyn Birkenfeld provided a major spark off the bench, finishing with 19 points on an efficient shooting night and knocking down seven of eight free throws. Her scoring presence proved crucial as the Queens stretched their lead during key moments.

The Queens also got key contributions from Ksenija Djokic, who recorded 8 points and six rebounds, while Iliana Hernandez added 11 points and five rebounds, including timely three-point shooting that kept the offense flowing.

Another strong performer for the Queens was Zalika Stevens, who chipped in 11 points and four rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench.

Wayland shot 56.4 percent from the floor in the second quarter, turning defense into offense and building momentum heading into halftime. The Queens continued to apply pressure in the second half, forcing turnovers and converting those opportunities into 27 points off Central Christian miscues.

Defensively, Wayland controlled the glass with a 37–29 rebounding advantage, limiting second-chance opportunities and protecting the paint. The Queens also showcased their depth, finishing with 52 bench points in the win.

With the victory, Wayland Baptist improves to 9–9 overall and 8–5 in SAC play, continuing to build momentum as the season progresses. The Queens will return to the floor on Thursday, January 29th, when they travel to Fort Worth, Texas for a SAC showdown with Texas Wesleyan. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
