OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – The Wayland Baptist Men's Soccer team dropped a hard-fought Sooner Athletic Conference matchup Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 to Oklahoma City University at Brian Harvey Field. With the loss, Wayland moves to 4-7-4 overall and 3-4-1 in SAC play.
Both teams battled for possession throughout the opening half, with Oklahoma City creating several early opportunities. Wayland goalkeeper Benjamin Godard kept the Stars off the scoreboard with saves in the 16th and 34th minutes.
The Pioneers generated scoring chances of their own, including a shot on goal from Baptiste Hervaud in the 28th minute that was turned away by Oklahoma City goalkeeper Vittorio Di Carlo.
The Stars broke through in the 35th minute when Francisco Miquel found the back of the net off an assist from Martino Di Braida, giving Oklahoma City a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Wayland came out aggressively in the second half, creating several opportunities in the opening minutes. The Pioneers recorded six shots in the first five minutes after the break, highlighted by a shot on goal from Felipe Dos Santos in the 49th minute that forced another save from Di Carlo.
The Pioneers continued to pressure Oklahoma City's defense throughout the second half, recording 10 shots while limiting the Stars to just four attempts over the final 45 minutes.
Wayland maintained its offensive intensity down the stretch, with Renato Katrip, Evan Schumacher, and Dos Santos all generating scoring opportunities. Hervaud had one final chance in the closing seconds, but his header sailed high as Oklahoma City held on for the narrow victory.
Hervaud led the Pioneers offensively with six shots, including one on goal, while Katrip followed with five attempts. Dos Santos added two shots, including one on target.
As a team, Wayland outshot Oklahoma City 15-12 and held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. However, the Pioneers managed just two shots on goal compared to four for the Stars.
