GOODWELL, OK. — Wayland Baptist football turned a strong defensive performance and a second-quarter offensive surge into a 42-14 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Saturday afternoon at Anchor D Stadium.
The victory improved the Pioneers to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while OPSU fell to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in conference action. Wayland outscored the Aggies 39-14 over the second and third quarters and held OPSU scoreless throughout the second half.
Wayland opened the scoring when Trent McLemore connected on a 45-yard field goal with 12:41 remaining in the first quarter. OPSU answered early in the second quarter with a touchdown to take a 7-3 advantage before McLemore knocked through a 21-yard field goal to cut the deficit to one.
The Pioneers then found the end zone for the first time after their defense provided excellent field position. Tyrone Morgan intercepted Tre Smith and returned the ball nine yards to the OPSU six-yard line. After Wayland settled for McLemore's second field goal, the defense forced another three-and-out. Wayland took advantage on its next possession when Aidan Crawford found Ethan Palmer for a 17-yard touchdown, giving the Pioneers a 13-7 lead.
OPSU responded with a touchdown to briefly regain the lead, 14-13, but Wayland answered almost immediately. Topper Sterling broke loose for a 41-yard touchdown run, and Kye Callicoatte converted the two-point attempt to put Wayland ahead 21-14.
The Pioneers added another score before halftime. Crawford completed passes to Jayden Littles and Dontevius Williams before finding Trey Warnsley for a 10-yard touchdown with 43 seconds remaining, sending Wayland into the break with a 28-14 advantage.
Wayland continued to create separation in the third quarter. A 47-yard completion from Crawford to Reggie Hurley moved the Pioneers deep into OPSU territory before Crawford connected with Dontevius Williams for an 18-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 35-14.
The defense and special teams then combined for one of the biggest plays of the afternoon. With OPSU attempting a 39-yard field goal, Tyrone Morgan blocked the kick and Brayden Hamby recovered the ball before returning it 65 yards for a touchdown, giving Wayland a commanding 42-14 advantage.
Wayland's defense controlled the game, limiting OPSU to 240 yards of total offense and 3.4 yards per play. The Pioneers recorded six sacks and 11 tackles for loss, intercepted two passes and held the Aggies to just 3-of-15 on third down and 1-of-4 on fourth down. OPSU finished with only 87 rushing yards on 40 attempts.
X'Zavion Williams led the defensive charge with seven total tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Dorian Coleman added 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack, while Kaleb Brooks recorded two tackles for loss and a sack. Kacen Anthony and Morgan each recorded interceptions, helping Wayland win the turnover battle.
Offensively, Crawford completed 16-of-27 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Williams led Wayland with four receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown, while Warnsley caught three passes for 35 yards and a score. Sterling led the ground game with 55 yards and a touchdown on eight carries, averaging 6.9 yards per attempt.
Head Coach Marcos Hinojos praised the Pioneers' ability to remain together and continue making plays throughout the afternoon.
"We weren't perfect today but we stayed the course and good things happened for us. We put together the most complete defensive game to date. We did a lot of things well offensively at the right times. Our leadership kept pouring themselves into the team. I'm very pleased about our team unity."
