Murphy’s Equalizer Helps Wayland Earn 1-1 Draw at Central Christian

McPHERSON, KS. — Wayland Baptist men's soccer battled back from a halftime deficit to earn a 1-1 draw against Central Christian College on Saturday at Grant Sports Complex.

With the result, the Pioneers moved to 3-3-4 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 2-0-1. Central Christian moved to 3-5-2 overall and 0-2-1 in conference action.

Wayland controlled much of the attacking pressure throughout the afternoon, finishing with a 23-9 advantage in total shots, a 10-4 edge in shots on goal and an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Pioneers generated nine shots in the opening half before increasing the pressure with 14 attempts after halftime.

Despite Wayland's early opportunities, Central Christian struck first in the 39th minute. Moritz Bienmuller scored off an assist from Rylan Snell at the 38:25 mark to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage. Wayland entered halftime trailing despite holding a 9-5 advantage in shots and generating six corner kicks.

The Pioneers came out aggressively in the second half and eventually found their equalizer. After Wayland continued to create chances around the Central Christian goal, Calum Murphy scored in the 64th minute to level the match at 1-1. The goal was Murphy's first of the season.

Wayland continued searching for the go-ahead goal over the final 26 minutes. Josue Gonzalez, Baptiste Hervaud, Maximiliano Campos, Felipe Dos Santos and Adam Delgado all put second-half attempts on goal, but Central Christian goalkeeper Martin Restrepo helped keep the match even.

The Pioneers produced several opportunities in the closing minutes. Jorge Arrondo Garcia had an attempt blocked in the 88th minute before Dos Santos forced a save. Murphy followed with another blocked attempt, and Delgado put a header on frame, but Restrepo made the save to preserve the draw.

Renato Katrip led Wayland with five shots, including two on goal, while Ariel Vallejo recorded four attempts. Dos Santos finished with three shots, and Murphy, Hervaud, Campos and Matus Nemec each added two. Goalkeeper Benjamin Godard played all 90 minutes and made three saves while allowing one goal.

Wayland will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 6, when the Pioneers face Oklahoma Panhandle State University at 7:30 p.m.
