PLAINVIEW --- The Pioneer men's basketball squad delivered a strong second-half performance to secure a 91–81 victory over College of the Ozarks on Thursday night in Plainview, improving their record to 17–5 overall and 11–5 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
After trailing 43–41 at halftime, the Pioneers came out with renewed energy on both ends of the floor, outscoring the Bobcats 50–38 in the second half to pull away late.
The opening half featured back-and-forth action, with neither team able to build significant separation. Wayland stayed within striking distance behind steady scoring and strong interior play, closing the half on a late basket to trim the deficit to two.
The momentum shifted after the break as the Pioneers elevated their offensive efficiency, shooting over 63 percent in the second half.
Rico Yarbrough led the charge with a dominant performance, finishing with 27 points and seven rebounds while consistently attacking the paint.
Jordan Logan added 16 points and eight boards, giving Wayland a powerful presence inside.
Marcus Green provided a major boost as well, scoring 15 points and hitting key shots during a decisive stretch in the final minutes.
Jamari Lawrence chipped in 10 points and six assists, helping orchestrate the offense and keep the pressure on the Ozarks defense.
Midway through the second half, Wayland began to take control with a series of strong defensive stops and efficient possessions. A late surge, highlighted by transition baskets and timely free throws, allowed the Pioneers to extend their lead to double digits in the final minute.
Wayland finished the night shooting 56.1 percent from the field and dominated in the paint with 56 points inside, a major factor in the win. The Pioneers also outrebounded the Bobcats 35–23 and converted 90 percent of their free throws in the second half to seal the result.
The Pioneers will look to continue their hot stretch of play on Saturday, February 7
th, when they host the John Brown Golden Eagles at 4:00 PM in the Hutcherson Center.
