OKLAHOMA CITY --- The Wayland Baptist Pioneers were unable to find their offensive rhythm on Thursday, dropping both games of a road doubleheader against #18 Mid-America Christian at MACU Baseball Field.
Â
Game 1: Mid-America Christian 2, Wayland Baptist 0
Wayland Baptist was held to just two hits in the opener as Mid-America Christian secured a 2-0 victory.
Despite the loss, the Pioneers received a strong outing on the mound from
Wellington Vargas, who went the distance and allowed just four hits and two unearned runs while striking out eight. Vargas battled through seven walks but consistently limited damage, keeping Wayland within striking distance throughout.
The difference came in the first inning when MACU capitalized on a Wayland error to plate both runs. From there, Vargas settled in, holding the Evangels scoreless over the final five innings.
Offensively, the Pioneers struggled to generate momentum against MACU starter Ibrahim Gonzalez, who tossed a complete-game shutout with nine strikeouts.
Wayland managed hits from
Edgard Bermudez and
Adonis Bernal but could not advance a runner past second base.

Game 2: Mid-America Christian 4, Wayland Baptist 2
In the nightcap, the Pioneers showed late life but ultimately fell short in a 4-2 decision.
The game remained scoreless through three innings before Mid-America Christian broke through in the fourth and added three more runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run home run from Nick Hill.
Wayland Baptist starter
Branin Seibert took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits over 4.2 innings, while
Tyler Thompson provided 1.1 innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen.
Trailing 4-0 entering the seventh, the Pioneers mounted a late rally.
Sinclair Pimentel reached base and
Christian Toledo followed with a single to spark the offense. Wayland capitalized on a MACU error, with
Raphael Beltre driving in a run as two unearned runs crossed the plate to cut the deficit to 4-2.
The rally, however, would stall there as MACU closed the door to secure the sweep.
Pimentel and Toledo each recorded hits and scored runs in the finale, while
Arcadio Martinez also added a hit for the Pioneers.
