WBU Baseball Drop Pair of Heartbreakers to OCU, Bow Out of 2026 SAC Baseball Championship presented by Netting Pros/Stadionic

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- The Wayland Baptist Pioneers saw their 2026 season end Friday, dropping a pair of tightly contested games to 3-seed Oklahoma City in opening series of the 2026 SAC Baseball Championships presented by Netting Pros/Stadionic.

Game 1: Oklahoma City 5, Wayland Baptist 4 (11 innings)

Wayland Baptist came out aggressive in the opener, capitalizing on early opportunities to seize control. The Pioneers plated four runs in the second inning, taking advantage of defensive miscues and timely hitting. RBI contributions from Cesar Ibarra and Edgard Bermudez highlighted the inning as Wayland jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

From there, the tone shifted.

Oklahoma City chipped away with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to even the score at 4-4. Despite the momentum swing, Wayland's pitching staff held firm. Tate House delivered a strong start, and Collin Arnold kept the Stars off the board late to send the game into extra innings.

The Pioneers had chances down the stretch, including a ninth-inning opportunity with runners on, but couldn't push across the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the 11th, Oklahoma City capitalized, using a leadoff double and a walk-off RBI single to end the game and steal the opener, 5-4.

Game 2: Oklahoma City 4, Wayland Baptist 3

Facing elimination, the Pioneers turned to a pitching-by-committee approach and once again found themselves locked in a tight battle.

Branin Seibert set the tone early, holding Oklahoma City to just one run over 5.2 innings. Wayland broke through in the fifth inning when Cesar Ibarra delivered an RBI single to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

The Stars answered in the sixth to tie the game, and after taking a 2-1 lead in the eighth, Wayland refused to go quietly.

In the top of the ninth, the Pioneers rallied. A pair of walks and a clutch two-run double from Adonis Bernal flipped the game back in Wayland's favor, giving the Pioneers a 3-2 lead and putting them three outs away from extending their season.

But Oklahoma City had one final response.

The Stars opened the bottom half with consecutive hits, and after a wild pitch tied the game, a bases-loaded RBI single completed the comeback, handing Wayland a 4-3 loss and ending the Pioneers' season.

Season Reflection

Wayland Baptist finishes the 2026 campaign at 29-21, with both postseason losses coming by a combined two runs. The Pioneers showed grit throughout the doubleheader, building early leads in both games and battling until the final out.

Despite the abrupt ending, the season was marked by growth, competitiveness, and a group that consistently put itself in position to win. Friday's results may not reflect the full story, but they underscore how narrow the margins can be in postseason baseball.

For the Pioneers, the foundation remains strong—and the standard moving forward is clear.
