Wayland Baptist Beach Volleyball Caps Historic Season with Final Four Finish

The 2026 season will go down as a landmark year for Wayland Baptist beach volleyball, as the Pioneers wrapped up one of the most successful campaigns in program history with a Final Four appearance at the NAIA National Championship last Saturday.

In just its second year of existence, the program made a remarkable leap forward. After finishing 8-10 in its inaugural season, Wayland Baptist engineered a dramatic turnaround, transforming into one of the top teams in the country in only a year's time. The growth was evident all season long, as the Pioneers developed consistency, depth, and confidence against high-level competition.

Wayland Baptist's postseason run was the culmination of a year filled with milestones and breakthroughs. After earning an invitation to the NAIA National Championship Tournament for the first time, the Pioneers proved they belonged among the nation's elite, battling their way into the semifinals and finishing the season among the top four teams in the country.

The success didn't stop there. Earlier in the year, Wayland Baptist captured the AVCA Small College Beach National Championship, signaling the program's rapid rise on the national stage. The title marked a defining moment for a young program that has quickly developed into a contender in collegiate beach volleyball.

Individually, the Pioneers were also recognized at the highest level. Taisiia Kalchenko and Deniz Yileri earned AVCA All-American honors for their outstanding performances throughout the season, anchoring Wayland's lineup and consistently delivering in key moments.

Wayland Baptist also dominated the Sooner Athletic Conference (Co-Central States) postseason awards. Selma Sutaj was named Conference Player of the Year, while Alaina Baran earned Newcomer of the Year honors and Milena Alliot-Maslankiewicz was recognized as Conference Freshman of the Year. Sutaj and Baran were also named Conference Pair of the Year, highlighting their impact as one of the nation's top duos.

The Pioneers placed four athletes on the First Team All-Conference list: Selma Sutaj, Alaina Baran, Lilou Henry-Souquet-Bressand, and Averi Penner. On the Second Team, Frida Espeseth, Milena Alliot-Maslankiewicz, and Deniz Yileri were honored for their strong contributions throughout the season.

Leading the charge was head coach Lucie Mahelova, who was named Conference Coach of the Year after guiding the Pioneers through a historic campaign and one of the most impressive turnarounds in the NAIA.

Wayland Baptist closed the year with a 23-6 overall record—the best mark in program history—highlighting the team's consistency, resilience, and growth from start to finish.

From a national championship to individual accolades and a deep postseason run, the 2026 season showcased the Pioneers' emergence as a force in NAIA beach volleyball. With a foundation now firmly established after just two seasons, Wayland Baptist looks poised to build on this historic success in the years ahead.
