ARLINGTON, Texas -- After an unforgettable day filled with comeback wins, offensive firepower, and a heartbreaking finish in the championship game, the Wayland Baptist softball team closed out Day 2 of the 2026 NCCAA Central Regional Championship with a 2-1 record and a runner-up finish in the tournament. The Pioneers battled through three high-scoring contests Saturday, showcasing resilience and determination throughout the day.
Wayland opened the day with a dramatic 12-11 walk-off victory over Dallas Christian College in one of the wildest games of the tournament. After surrendering six runs in the opening inning, the Pioneers refused to back down and chipped away at the deficit immediately.
Reagan Davis-Pena started the comeback effort with a double and later scored, while
Berkley Bradley delivered an RBI single in the first inning.
The Pioneers tied the game in the second inning behind a two-run double from
Yaneli Jaramillo and another RBI knock from Bradley. Wayland then grabbed its first lead in the third after Bradley delivered a two-run single to put the Pioneers ahead 9-7.
Dallas Christian rallied late and reclaimed an 11-9 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, but Wayland once again responded under pressure.
Erin Trevino reached base to spark the inning before
Mikayla Carrillo singled home a run. Jaramillo added a squeeze bunt to bring the Pioneers within one, and Bradley drew a walk that allowed the tying run to score. Moments later, Carrillo crossed home on an error behind the plate to complete the incredible walk-off comeback and seal the 12-11 victory.
Brooklyn Ray earned the win in relief after tossing 6.1 innings, while Bradley finished with three hits and three RBIs. Davis-Pena scored four runs and reached base five times in the victory.
Wayland kept the momentum rolling in its second game of the day, defeating Arlington Baptist 13-7 behind a 16-hit offensive explosion. After trailing 1-0 early, the Pioneers answered in the second inning when
Brooke McLaurin doubled home a run before Carrillo added an RBI single.
The Pioneers broke the game open in the third inning with three more runs.
Lia Lozano drove in a run with a single before
Reagan Davis-Pena delivered a two-run single to extend the lead to 5-1. Wayland added two more in the fifth inning thanks to Davis-Pena's RBI triple and a sacrifice fly from Carrillo.
Wayland's biggest inning came in the sixth, scoring four more runs behind RBI singles from Davis-Pena and Carrillo along with a costly Arlington Baptist error.
Shae'Leigh Johnson added a two-run double in the seventh inning to provide insurance runs as the Pioneers secured the 13-7 victory.
Davis-Pena led the offense with three hits and four RBIs, while Carrillo added three RBIs of her own.
Kailee Sanchez collected three hits, and McLaurin scored three runs in the win.
Kynleigh Kirby earned the victory in the circle after pitching five innings.
The day concluded with the NCCAA Central Regional Championship game against Southwestern Christian, where the Pioneers nearly completed another late comeback before falling 8-7 in walk-off fashion.
Southwestern Christian grabbed an early 3-0 lead, but Wayland answered in the fourth inning. Kirby, McLaurin, and
Lia Lozano all recorded hits before Davis-Pena ripped a two-run double to tie the game at 3-3.
The contest remained tied until the sixth inning when Southwestern Christian capitalized on defensive miscues to score three runs and move ahead 6-3. Once again, the Pioneers responded with resilience in the seventh inning. Carrillo opened the inning with a single before Johnson delivered a sacrifice fly. Kirby followed with a two-run single to tie the game, and McLaurin doubled home another run to give Wayland a 7-6 advantage.
However, Southwestern Christian answered in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs to walk off the championship game and hand the Pioneers a narrow 8-7 defeat.
Despite the heartbreaking ending, Wayland showcased offensive depth throughout the tournament, totaling 32 runs across the three games Saturday. Davis-Pena, Carrillo, Kirby, Bradley, and McLaurin all delivered key performances throughout the day as the Pioneers battled to the final out of the regional championship.
