Pioneers Battle Division II UTPB in 1-0 Road Loss

Box Score

ODESSA, Texas – Wayland Baptist University's women's soccer team battled NCAA Division II University of Texas Permian Basin on Wednesday night and came up just short, falling 1-0 at the UTPB Soccer Field.

The Pioneers, who entered the contest looking to pick up their first win of the season, kept the Falcons within reach throughout the 90-minute match. UTPB scored the game's lone goal at the 25:14 mark when Cassandra Ramirez found the back of the net to give the Falcons a 1-0 advantage.

Wayland continued to pressure the UTPB defense and created several opportunities throughout the remainder of the match. The Pioneers finished with 13 total shots, including six shots on goal, while UTPB recorded 11 shots with five on frame.

Camila Zavala led the Pioneers with two shots on goal on two total attempts. Gabriella Chapa recorded two shots with one on goal, while Tannia Diaz added one shot on goal on one attempt. Ashley Perez finished with three shots, including one on goal, and Talia Gisonni recorded one shot on goal on one attempt.

Aniyah Perez and Alexia Fregoso each recorded one shot, while Erin Carr added two attempts.

Goalkeeper Maria Tomas played all 90 minutes for Wayland and recorded four saves, keeping the Pioneers within one goal throughout the second half.

Wayland generated nine corner kicks in the match compared to just one for UTPB, including several opportunities late in the contest as the Pioneers searched for the equalizer.

The Pioneers continued to apply pressure in the final 15 minutes. Zavala forced a save in the 78th minute, while Perez had another shot saved by the UTPB goalkeeper in the 84th minute. Wayland earned three consecutive corner kicks between the 83rd and 85th minutes, but the Pioneers were unable to find the tying goal.

Despite the setback, Wayland showed continued and consistent determination against a Division II opponent and will look to regroup before returning to action next week.

Wayland Baptist will look to bounce back on Wednesday, Sept. 9, when the Pioneers travel to Hobbs, New Mexico, to face the University of the Southwest at 1 p.m.
