KEENE, Texas – Wayland Baptist University men's soccer took a one-goal advantage into halftime against Southwestern Adventist University, but three second-half goals turned the match as the Pioneers fell 3-1 on the road.

Baptiste Hervaud provided the breakthrough for Wayland in the 37th minute. Hervaud found the back of the net at 36:22 to give the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage, and Wayland carried that lead into the halftime break. The goal came on one of just two first-half shots for the Pioneers.

Southwestern Adventist responded quickly after halftime. Gian Acosta tied the match at 1-1 in the 48th minute off an assist from Israel Pina.

The Knights took their first lead in the 60th minute when Armando Lara scored, with Pina recording his second assist of the match. Southwestern Adventist extended its advantage less than seven minutes later as Adrian Rodriguez scored at 66:03 to make it 3-1.

Despite the result, Wayland generated more of the attacking pressure statistically. The Pioneers outshot Southwestern Adventist 8-6 and held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. Wayland produced six of its eight shots in the second half while looking for a response. Southwestern Adventist, however, made the most of its opportunities by putting four of its six shots on goal and converting three.

Lorian Aerts led Wayland with three shots, including one on goal. Hervaud finished with two shots and one on target while recording the Pioneers' lone goal. Maximiliano Campos added a shot on goal, while Matus Nemec and Brayden Massingham each recorded a shot.

In goal, Benjamin Godard played the full 90 minutes for Wayland and recorded one save. Southwestern Adventist goalkeeper Jesus Gomez finished with two saves.

The match marked a frustrating finish after a strong opening half for the Pioneers, who held the lead through the opening 45 minutes before Southwestern Adventist's three-goal response in the second half.

Wayland will return to action Saturday, Sept. 26, when the Pioneers take on Nelson University at 5:30 p.m.
