Pioneers Rally Past McMurry, 3-1

ABILENE, Texas — The Wayland Baptist University men's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2026 season Sunday afternoon, defeating McMurry University 3-1 at Wilford Moore Stadium.

The Pioneers, who entered the match 1-0-1, controlled much of the offensive action throughout the afternoon, finishing with a 20-4 advantage in shots and putting 13 attempts on frame.

Wayland struck first in the 24th minute when Baptiste Hervaud found the back of the net to give the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage. McMurry answered in the 33rd minute when Audrick Moreno scored, sending the teams into halftime tied 1-1.

The Pioneers quickly regained the lead early in the second half. Hervaud scored again just over three minutes into the second period, putting Wayland ahead 2-1 in the 49th minute.

Wayland continued to pressure the McMurry defense and added an insurance goal in the 67th minute. Hervaud completed the hat trick with his third goal of the afternoon, while Rivaldo Mitchell and Maximiliano Campos each contributed to the Pioneer scoring attack with assists.

Hervaud led the Pioneers offensively with three goals on five shots, including four shots on goal, accounting for all three of Wayland's goals.

Mitchell recorded two assists, while Campos added one assist.

Defensively, Drew Arehart played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded one save while allowing one goal. Wayland limited McMurry to just four total shots, with only two reaching the target.

Following the victory, Wayland assistant coach Coach Longee emphasized the team's character and discipline in earning the win.

"Character is found in tough environments, today the team showed that they held the disciple and character to achieve great things this season. All Glory to God."

The Pioneers also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks and finished the match with three unanswered goals after McMurry tied the game in the first half.

With the victory, Wayland improves to 2-0-1 on the season.

NEXT UP

Wayland Baptist will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 9, when the Pioneers travel to Hobbs, New Mexico, to face the University of the Southwest. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
