George was 'heart & soul of Flying Queens basketball'

Marsha Hutcherson George literally grew up around Wayland basketball.  When her father, Claude, took over sponsorship of the women’s basketball team at Wayland in 1950, George became an avid fan and booster of the Hutcherson Flying Queens.  In those early years, she accompanied the team on road trips along with her parents and brother, Mike.

After graduating from Plainview High School, George attended Wayland, and her love of Flying Queens basketball continued on into her adult years. Following her father’s death, George and the rest of the Hutcherson family continued their involvement with the college, providing air transportation, hosting team functions and sponsoring scholarships that benefit deserving students.   The Marsha Hutcherson George Endowment scholarship continues to be awarded annually to deserving student assistants.

Until health problems forced her to stop, George coordinated the Queen’s Court Hospitality Room and arrived early for every home game to help sell T-shirts benefiting the team.  She was twice honored as the recipient of the Roy C. McClung Service Award.

Johnna Pointer, head coach of the Queens from 1996-2003, says that George was the heart and soul of Flying Queen basketball for many years.

“When she attended games, her very presence, the encouragement and support, her smile and laughter warmed the Hutch.  Later when Marsha could not be present, we knew full well she was with us in spirit.  She listened to our games, and we felt her love and support game after game.

“Many Monday mornings, Marsha would call to discuss the games we played over the weekend.  She was always interested and always positive and upbeat.  I am grateful for the tremendous contributions Marsha George made to Flying Queen basketball.”

George, a longtime resident of Hart, Texas, was an integral part of the Hart Independent School District for 21 years.  She worked first as an elementary teacher’s aide, then as high school librarian.  She also spent time as cheerleading sponsor, student council sponsor, and UIL coach and coordinator.

The mother of four children, proud grandmother of 10, and a great-grandmother, Marsha Hutcherson George died on December 9, 2006.
